OnLive's new app allows you to play PS3 and Xbox 360 games on iPad and Android devices
Are you a big time gamer? Wish you could play your Xbox 360 or PS3 video games while on the go? Wish you could play L.A. Noire, Batman: Arkham City or the latest Assassin’s Creed on your Android or Apple iOS device? Now you can with a new service called OnLive.
After downloading and launching the OnLive app on your smartphone or tablet, you can sign up for a free account and play demos of various games. You can also purchase individual games or subscribe to a gaming plan. If you sign up for OnLive and then install the new mobile app on your supported device you will get the Lego Batman game added to your account for free.
The way OnLive works, is while playing online, all the heavy work of rendering graphics and processing the game play is taken care of by OnLive’s servers. The servers then pumps back the video to your device using an internet connection.
In order to get the full OnLive gaming experience, your whole gaming interactions are processed from your fingertips, to the device, through the internet, onto OnLive’s servers, and then back to your device within milliseconds. Thats pretty amazing if you ask me. Obviously, the faster your internet service the better your gaming experience will be. If your internet connection isn’t up to OnLive’s standards, streaming quality is automatically adjusted to ensure maximum performance.
You will be able to play some OnLive games right from your mobile device using the on-screen touch controls, which seems kind of hard to do for certain games. Or, you can purchase OnLive’s $49.99 wireless bluetooth controller. There are around 25 games at present that can be played using a touchscreen, and another 200 that can be played using the OnLive wireless controller.
The service offers cross platform compatibility, meaning your progress will be available on all your devices. You will also be able to engage in multiplayer activity against your iOS, Android, and desktop (PC or Mac) playing friends.
According to OnLive, the following Android devices have been tested:
Acer Iconia Tab A500, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, HTC Evo View, HTC Flyer, HTC Jetstream, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Sony Ericsson Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive, HTC EVO, HTC Nexus One, HTC Rezound 4G, HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL, Motorola Droid 2, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola DROID BIONIC 4G, Motorola DROID RAZR 4G, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy S II 4G.
Reports have also been going around that the Galaxy S and other Gingerbread devices which are not listed, also work. So if your Smartphone is not on the list, try it out anyway. The Universal OnLive Wireless Controller has been tested with the Acer Iconia Tab A500, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Toshiba Thrive.
If you’re on the iPad, you have to purchase the games through a computer first. Once you have purchased the video games on your OnLive account you can then log in and start playing on your iPad. The available games are cheaper than what they would usually cost on the PS3 or Xbox 360.
Let us know how your gaming experience is using OnLive. Does the video game streaming work as you expected? Are you even interested in playing Xbox 360 and PS3 games on your mobile devices? Were you able to get the Lego Batman game for free? Let use know down below.
