HP drops Palm WebOS, TouchPad prices Slashed to $99, what went wrong? (UPDATE)

HP has officially dropped the entire production line of its WebOS devices. This means anything with WebOS installed will be discontinued from HP, this also means big sales on all the existing WebOS devices, including the HP TouchPad that was just released on July 1.
Just two months ago, I took some pictures at a Best Buy store, of where Best Buy was going to make room for the new HP TouchPad tablet. This New WebOS based tablet was supposed to take on the famous iPad 2, many believed the HP tablet would do well for customers that wanted to have an alternative to Apple's iPad 2
It didn’t take long for customers to realize that HP could not compete with the iPad. Many customers have complained of how slow the WebOS tablet is and also the low amount of apps that are available for the tablet. With a little over 1,000 apps available on the WebOS, it is really hard to compete with Apple's iPad 2 and Android’s large library of apps.
Electronic stores started to complain. Customers were just not buying the WebOS devices and the stores had a good amount of unsold HP TouchPad tablets in stock, that were just not going out the door. So whats a big corporate company to do? Well, HP pulls the plug on the whole WebOS production on August 18, after just one month of the launch of its premier tablet and slashes the price of the TouchPad, to get them out the door.
HP’s website has the 16GB TouchPad tablet on sale now for $99 and the 32GB for $150, but good luck ordering one. Every major electronic store online has the tablet marked as sold out. I called some Best Buys and Radio Shack’s around town and all confirmed that they were sold out this morning by the time they opened the doors for business. I even called a Costco a representative was nice enough to inform me that HP had sent a letter to stop selling the tablet and to send the remaining back. I also made a phone call to HP and they also confirmed that they were sold out and offered me to be put on an email list for if more happen to appear I would be notified via email.
Its sad to see WebOS go so soon. Competition is always good, it keeps companies on their feet and allows the customer to have more options. It will be very interesting to see where this tablet will go, now that HP is going to turn its back on it so soon and not support the device. It will be nice to see if the TouchPad goes underground and programers, hackers and developers update the tablet to do some awesome stuff, now that HP isn’t even going to update the tablet.
Do you have a HP TouchPad? If so, do you like it? Are you disappointed with HP’s decision? Or, Are you one of many (including me) looking to pick one up on the cheap? Leave your comments and thoughts down below.
Update: bn.com has just lowered the price only on the 16GB TouchPad for $101 plus tax and shipping. I just placed an order my self, seemed to work total came out to be $115.77. Oddly, the 32GB is still at $599. Ill update you guys of any changes and when I receive the TouchPad. If you do want one at this price you should jump on the order fast before they sell out. Make sure to Leave a comment if you ordered one.
